As the birds wheel and scream in the pre-dawn drizzle
And I ? I arise early to write
But never early enough to beat that first light...
In the bright mornings of the seasons
Already warm at six - sun's been up since four,
Light sparkling on the droplets left by the retic -
Far sweeter to leave your bed, sarong in hand
To greet the birds, and the babies, screaming and wheeling...
Three double espressos and the light seems brighter,
Even in the darkest pre-dawn din of winter.
Dreaming, as the ink freezes in the nib
Of the sweeter seasons of the year -
When the light comes streaming in,
And the babies call to the birds
Wheeling and screaming in the warm summer dawn.
