Inspired By The Sea

An old longing in my bones
Like the driftwood bleached white
To walk these shores barefooted
Feel the cold sand give under my feet

A sweet longing for the sea
Like the salty splash of the still-screaming oyster
Or the fat herring
Sizzling skin over coals

Some ancient need to feel the sea
Like worn pebbles clattering in my hands
To roll them between my palms
An amulet against the coming night

When this smooth pebble and I
Will one day be just sand
And the salty waves
Will roll over both of us
